The Solar SEED Project

WHAT IS SEED?
Solar Energy Education and Demonstration
a.k.a. “SEED,” or “The Solar SEED Project”.

Mission Statement
SEED is a non-profit organization (501c-3) that educates the public on the practical uses of renewable energy.

SEED focuses on projects that:

  • Promote public awareness about renewable energy technology
  • Bring renewable energy to developing nations and communities that do not have reliable power.
  • Combine renewable energy with music and other creative arts
  • Have high public visibility to reach out to as many people as possible

SEED Projects

  • Visiting schools and public events with the Solar Bus to set up displays, teach classes, and power stages with solar energy
  • Installing educational displays of renewable energy in public places.
  • Bringing solar energy systems to impoverished communities that have no power
SEED has organized several trips to Haiti and Puerto Rico to install solar energy systems on medical clinics, schools, and residences for people with low income and vital needs.
  • Bringing portable solar energy to power public events
We have powered many public events with a portable solar energy system. We typically work with the Solar Bus to provide this service but we are working on getting our own solar trailer.
  • Obtaining land that can be used for group net-metering projects
Many people want to have a solar energy system but can’t because there are too many trees shading their house, or they live in the city and don’t have enough roof space. Many states now provide a way for these people to install solar panels at a more sunny remote location and utilize the system for net metering just as if it was installed at their residence. SEED plans to obtain land and facilitate a way by which people can install these systems.
  • Helping existing organizations go solar
With a focus on projects that have a lot of public visibility and potential for education, SEED will help existing organizations and businesses go solar. Examples include existing music venues and drive-in movie theatres. Any organization or business interested in installing a renewable energy system and making it available to the public for educational purposes, could utilize SEED’s services to accomplish this and benefit from our non-profit status. These systems will differ from standard commercial solar systems because the emphasis will be on educating the people who visit. SEED provides expertise in designing the educational aspects of these systems, providing kiosk design, interactive displays, and monitoring systems that can be accessed online by anyone.
  • Building a multifunctional center for solar energy projects and research As a longer term project, we have plans to obtain land and build an educational center for solar-powered concerts, movies, research, testing of solar ideas, and teaching classes on solar energy. We also plan to create a renewable energy science museum with interactive displays that is open to the public.
  • Helping organizations and schools with existing solar energy systems improve the educational aspect of these systems.
Many schools have installed solar energy systems but are lacking the hardware, software, and/or technical understanding to be able to take full advantage and teach the students about how they work and to monitor these systems in an educational way. We will offer all of the above so that schools can improve the educational aspect of their existing solar energy systems.
  • Teaching classes in solar and renewable energy
SEED will offer online classes in solar and renewable energy, and will also teach classes in the Vermont area at existing educational institutions.
  • Other solar educational projects
Any project that is educational in nature and relates to solar energy, SEED will be attracted to participating in.
